The Ford Escort was introduced in 1981 and replaced both the Ford Pinto and the Ford Fiesta on the subcompact end of Ford's model line. The Escort proved extremely popular, and was one of the top models in the United States by sales for most of the production's run. The Ford Escort soft top was introduced in 1983 and was meant to compete with the Volkswagen Golf, another popular convertible compact car.

A replacement Ford Escort convertible top model was introduced for the second generation model in 1991. This model was based on the Mazda B platform. The second generation Ford Escort convertible top was not as strong a seller as the first generation, and the line was eventually discontinued by Ford in 1996.
